Quilts & Textiles of England & Wales – September 2013

Workshop with UK quilters at Hever Castle, Sept. 2013

This was our second specialty tour; it focused on quilts and other textiles in southern England and Wales.  The tour also included locations to broaden our exposure to Britain, its history, culture, and beauty.  We shared with local quilters in two locations:  Bath and at Hever Castle Patchwork Show.  Some highlights along the way were:

  • a presentation at Mill Dene Garden by Bren Boardman, a textile artist
  • guided tour at William Morris’ Kelmscott Manor
  • Buscot Park – house, gardens and art collection
  • Tintern Abbey
  • The Welsh Quilt Centre with presentation by Jen Jones
  • The National Wool Museum of Wales
  • National History of Wales at St. Fagan’s, on their Food & Drink Festival weekend
  • guided tour of the American Museum, Bath
  • Gloucester Cathedral with ecclesiastical textiles
  • Highclere Castle, site of Downton Abbey filming
  • presentation at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace
  • Hever Castle with regional Patchwork Show
  • Marc Chagall windows at All Saints Church, Tudeley

England in Miniature – September 2012

 This was our first specialty tour for dollshouse and miniature enthusiasts, and we had a full group of 20 travelers.  We focused on visiting miniature exhibitions, shops, and the large Birmingham Miniatura Show, but also included many full-sized homes, churches, museums, and gardens for inspiration.  An afternoon spent with members of the York Miniature Club was a highlight, as were:

Gardens of Ireland – September 2011

A full group of 30 new and returning travelers joined us for our first tour to Ireland.  In additon to many beautiful gardens, we visited historical sites and saw some of Ireland’s most scenic places.  Highlights of this tour included:

Castles & Gardens of Scotland – September 2009

Nine alums from the 2007 England tour returned and brought others for this two-week tour of the highlands of Scotland.  We put some variety into this tour from whiskey to haggis, from Neolithic cairns to 21st century engineering feats, from experiencing a smoky 16th century croft to cheering on the winning pipe band at The Braemar Gathering.  Just a few of the highlights included:
